Kiel

„The sea reaches into the heart of the city!”

This is the motto of the capital of the northern and most beautiful state of Schleswig-Holstein.

Kiel is a traditional maritime and naval city. Here the submarine has been invented and marine biologists discovered the plankton, which is the most important food of many whales and other fish. Also Albert Einstein visited Kiel every summer before his emigration into the United States of America. Together with a friend he further developed in these years the gyroscopic compass. The international sea- and ferryport, the naval base “Tirpitzhafen” of the German Bundesmarine, the many dockyards and last but not least the famous Kiel-Canal influence the life of this city and the Kiel people. If you love the sea you may fall in love with Kiel!

Every year in the end of June sailors from all over the world meet for ten days in Kiel when the greatest sailing event in the world (3.5 million visitors!), the “Kieler Woche”, takes place on the Kiel Firth. In 1972 Kiel Schilksee was the scene of the olympic sailing regattas and the “Tirpitz Harbour” is the home port of the famous white training sailing boat “Gorch Fock”.

Kiel is the gateway to Scandinavia and the Baltic Region. The city is presenting itself as an international partner with the aim to overcome national borders. Together with the twin cities Coventry, Gydinia, Kaliningrad, Tallinn and Vaasa Kiel formed kind of an “Association of Baltic Sea Towns and Cities”.

In Kiel and around the city you can find several memorials and museums of the German maritime history.

Yeah, Kiel is a really attractive and interesting city. I also fell in love with it and finally I have found my personal fortune there.

Here is my "Lighthouse-Keeper"

Naturally a city influenced so much by the water has a lot of lighthouses and other aids to navigation to guide the ships on it's waterways.
